Trademark Musings

Thoughts on trademark issues by Laura Winston

‘Cause Oscar Mayer Has a Way With _______________________

If you’re like me, you learned to spell “bologna” from that kid with the fishing pole and the sandwich.   Then of course there’s the unforgettable “I wish I were an Oscar Mayer wiener, that is what I’d really like to be.  ‘Cuz if I were an Oscar Mayer wiener, all the world would be in love with me.”   And Oscar Mayer’s bacon is well-known.  But up till now,  the king of nitrate-cured meats has advertised them as separate products.  Now for the first time ever, the New York Times reports,  Oscar Mayer is promoting all of its products together in a new advertising campaign.

Oscar F. Mayer was a German immigrant who, with other members of his family, started the meat business that eventually grew into the powerhouse it is today.  In 1906, his company was one of the first to participate voluntarily in the government’s new meat inspection program.  In 1929, Oscar Mayer & Co. began selling hot dogs banded with a yellow band bearing the now-famous OSCAR MAYER trademark.

Now owned by Kraft, the new campaign to refresh the brand, according to the Times article, and remind people of the general joy there is to be had from processed meat products.  Oscar Mayer’s new tag line?  “It doesn’t get any better than this.”
